About Gymnastics
History of
Gymnastics
The sport of gymnastics
began with the ancient Greeks, Mesopotamians and Egyptians.
Exercises were designed
by these people to keep fit and train for warfare.
In the early part of
the 19th century J.F. Jahn, a German and P.H. Ling, a Swede, developed
separate German and Swedish styles of gymnastics.
Gymnastics was one of the seven sports included in the first modern Olympics
in 1948.
Gymnastics for men was
included in the Olympics from 1896, while the first women gymnasts was
included from 1928.
